About Jules Smith
Whimsy on a Wednesday
and I might show up on other days
Hello, I’m Jules Smith, a writer, artist, and professional noticer of life’s small, curious, and occasionally nonsensical moments. Some call it art philosophy.
I’ve worked with a variety of media publications and companies over the years, writing on everything from interior design and club culture to restaurant reviews, interviews, and all manner of fanciful malarkey. My writing life has included several books, humorous verse, song lyrics, reflective pieces, and observational snapshots of everyday life.
Alongside writing, I draw and paint and I’m particularly fond of combining image and word wherever possible. Sometimes a painting comes with a story. Sometimes a story demands a painting. Occasionally, neither behaves and something unexpected happens instead.
My work tends to wander along different avenues depending on mood, subject, and curiosity. You’ll find satirical observations of daily life ( known as Whimsy on a Wednesday), thoughtful musings on art and creativity, personal essays, and illustrated pieces that sit somewhere between philosophy and play.
I am easily distracted by anything shiny and new, occasionally irritated beyond belief, and perpetually striving to be calmer, wiser, and marginally better than last year -while remaining gloriously inconsistent, mildly tripolar and forever searching for the point of things. I love adventure, laughter, art in all its forms, and the freedom to follow the muse when she bothers to turn up. Shame she’s not as reliable as karma.
This Substack brings together my writing and art in one place. A home for whimsy, illustrated stories, reflections on creativity, and everyday oddities that make life interesting.
If you enjoy sardonic and rude gentle humour, art with a story behind it, and the occasional philosophical wobble, you’re very welcome here.
