Banburgh Castle up on the hill in Northumberland

So, I forgot to mention a little junket to Northumberland a month or so ago.  Right up there on the blustery northeast coast to a little village called Amble.  Stayed in a lovely cottage, ate lobster, and went to visit castles.

Bamburgh

This coastal Norman stronghold sits on a grand stretch of beach and is where some of the show Last Kingdom was filmed.

Here’s another castle at Morpeth…

Morpeth Castle Northumberland

Part of this is now a holiday rental home. That was a good buy! I’d rather like to live there.

Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle

You all know this one cos this one is the Harry Potter Castle!  Disappointingly, I didn’t get to watch a game of Quidditch.

How Much Is That Doggy In The Window?

I don’t think the pup is for sale but I did see the boat of my dreams.

Boat, tug, out on the harbour

Now this is the kind of boat I want. It’s perfect. I just need someone to buy it for me and go and put it in the river. Thanks.

In the Meantime

I’ll keep telling tall stories and teaching kids about monsters. Perhaps then I’ll be able to buy a boat.

I got booked for a day’s storytelling and found that the adults enjoyed it even more than the kids!

Only Eat in Season

Harvest box

That’s what they say, isn’t it? I don’t know if this is a fashion trend or health advice. Anyway, I’m very lucky to have good friends that own an allotment so I get brought all sorts of loveliness in boxes.

Just look at the late afternoon sunshine settling on those sunflowers. Such a homely, vintage vibe. Gorgeous.

And down the road near Cobweb Cottage, I got some fresh eggs from the chickens running around in the garden.

Food for Thoresby

Thoresby Hall

I attended the great food fair at  Thoresby Hall where Great Expectations was filmed and my great expectations were met. Thoresby Hall is an absolutely stunning country mansion that is now a hotel and spa resort with delightful grounds.

Sandro from The Great British Bake Off

The food fair was fantastic and even better when I realised Sandro from the Great British Bake Off was appearing and decorating a cake. EEK!

I love the Bake Off and the new season started again last night. Don’t ever ring me on a Tuesday evening in Autumn.

Food was consumed,

Gyoza and spicy fries

buses were caught,

And the day was rather lovely.

Total Tractors

This weekend just gone I went to see the Vintage Tractor Run through the villages by the Young Farmer’s Association.

This weekend coming I’m going to the ploughing show. I’ve been wanting to go to that for years and see how competitive ploughing can actually get. No, I’m not a farmer but with this level of recent experience, I probably could be. Anyway, I’ll let you know about that next time.

 Right you are.

Alnwick Castle: the scullery page burned one too many strawberry tarts in that castle’s goth oven.

Yes, it does look a tad like Alfred burnt the cakes there!

I love that boat. That boat has got my name all over – it’s just in invisible ink. Besides, the people who own it clearly don’t know how to use boats cos they’ve gone and put it on the pavement. Tch! I should have it. ;P

I’m happy to start a ‘fans only’ monster page – subscription: offers over 1k for 10 minutes.

English country houses have Pimms, darling!

All buses are just travelling entertainment centres. *)

That’s cheap over here for free-range eggs! In the shop, Burford Browns are around £3.00 per pack.

Hmm, I’m guessing the egg folks aren’t from Clarkson’s Farm, otherwise they’d be shut down for no proper “car park”. Great price nonetheless, and always better than store bought.

Well, you never took me!

I thought they had a ploughing competition section. That’s what they said on FB! I know – you were stuck in the beer tent, right?

Anyway, is it worth a gander?

Oh yes, its good. It’s just so big. They definitely do some ploughing, I might have seen it in the far distance once. You can spend the day there.

When you put it all together you’ve had a rather lovely summer all rural and water based. I expect to see paintings of this. As for boats I don’t think you’re cut out for a nautical future having seen you bang your head every day on our boat
Bake off was amazing last night I loved the duck, bird and the beaver was hilarious. No you can’t have a tractor

I really have! Now for a bountiful Autumn!

What do you mean I can’t have a tractor?!

I loved the duck cake too. Work of art, that.

Happy for you to see that prime, lovely, historical sites in England are not overrun with tattoo’d chubsters in yoga pants and flipflops.

Julesy, look for a STEAM tractor rally if you really want to have a fine time. From what I see on the web, Shrewsbury hosts one every year or so. Steam punk before such was cool: Massive Edwardian machines belching fine black smoke, steel wheel treads thrasing the pavement, whistles blowing and scaring every dog in the county … you’ll enjoy it!
