The Dreamcatcher

In the heart of the desolate forest stood an enigmatic figure known only as the Dreamcatcher. He was a man draped in shadows, a haunting silhouette with piercing grey eyes that seemed to penetrate one’s very soul. His attire was an ominous ensemble: a tattered black coat and a top hat perched precariously on his head, casting a veil of mystery over his face.

Legend had it that the Dreamcatcher possessed the ability to capture dreams. Not the pleasant dreams that bring joy and comfort, but the restless, tormenting nightmares that plague the minds of the innocent. Children would speak in hushed whispers about the eerie man who prowled the forest at night, collecting the darkest fears that lingered in the ether. Parents would shush them but give knowing looks to each other through the flickering candlelight.

One late autumnal evening, a young boy named Frederick, plagued by such nightmares, summoned the courage to venture into the forest in search of the Dreamcatcher. Wrapped against the wind in his father’s coat he snook out of the cabin when everyone slept determined to rid himself of the malevolent visions. He donned his bravery like armour and set forth into the shadows.

As Frederick traipsed deeper into the forest, the trees seemed to close in, their branches clawing at the moonlit sky and scratching his pa’s big jacket. He felt an eerie presence watching him, yet he pressed on, guided only by his unwavering determination. After what felt like an eternity, he stumbled upon a clearing adorned with peculiar, luminescent symbols etched into the ground.

There, standing amidst the symbols, was the Dreamcatcher. His eyes glowed like hot steel within the shadows of his hat. The air grew colder, and the atmosphere turned thick with apprehension.

“Who dares seek my presence?” the Dreamcatcher’s voice echoed through the clearing, chilling Frederick to his core.

“I-I am Frederick,” he stammered. “I seek to rid myself of these nightmares. Please, I beg you, can you help me?”

The Dreamcatcher studied the boy’s pallid countenance momentarily as if contemplating his sincerity. Finally, he nodded, lifting his hat to reveal a dark void. He extended his hand and extracted a writhing, shadowy mass—a representation of Frederick’s nightmares.

“Take this,” the Dreamcatcher instructed, placing the dark mass in his trembling hands. “Confront your fears, young man, and you shall then find peace.”

With a sense of foreboding and will intertwining, Frederick clutched the nightmarish entity and began to confront the horrors that had haunted him. As he faced them head-on, standing tall to the fear, the shadows transformed and dissipated, leaving behind only fragments of their existence. All that was left in his hand was a webbed twig circle decorated with feathers from forest birds.

The Dreamcatcher watched silently, nodding in approval as the boy overcame his troubles. In that moment, Frederick realised the true purpose of the enigmatic figure—the Dreamcatcher was not only a collector of nightmares but a harbinger of courage, enabling the lost and anxious to conquer their inner turmoil.

With the nightmares extinguished, Frederick thanked the Dreamcatcher, who disappeared into the shadows, leaving the forest calm and serene.

The talisman created from the destruction his nightmares forever hung in his window; a reminder that even in the darkest of nights, he held the power to diminish the demons within himself.

Inktober…is it a terrifying portent of what is to come or a vivid memory of what was?

Snook took a look for a book. Let’s stop there or there could be a talisman issue. I suggest that you move house before things get complicated.

BTW, I’m famous now. The producer, John Cohen LIKED MY drawing on Instagram. I have been touched by Hollywood. Roll the red carpet. *)
